Tree clearing for long term resilience clearance.

Northamptonshire

Trees were cleared adjacent to an overhead power line to achieve a long term resilience clearance. The site was a long the edge of a woodland at the point of a footpath and next to an open boggy area. This land also surrounded a recycling plant so needed to be done to retain as much tree cover to help screen the recycling plant.

The project was further complicated by the presence of great crested newts so chipping of the brash was prevented as this would have restricted the amount of suitable habitat for the newts. A dead hedge was created to enhance newt habitat and to enable movement of the newts throughout the wood and in to the surrounding bog land. The dead hedge also maintained a boundary along the edge of the footpath to prevent pedestrians straying into the boggy land where most of the newts were residing whilst maintaining a safe footpath for walkers.
